Scottish Masters 2013

It’s been a week since the Scottish Masters, unfortunately due to a car accident; this is the first chance I have had to report on what happened. Before I do, no one was hurt in the accident; other than the cars themselves which is the main thing.  Suffice to say after the elation of the Masters, this week has been one disaster after another.

Anyway, we eventually had 24 players signed up; of which 23 managed to make it through the Scotch Mists that descended over Scotland.  5 rounds in one day was going to be ambitious to say the least, but we kept the games running pretty much on time throughout the day.  Round one saw 2 players arriving late, but thankfully not late enough; that they couldn’t quickly get right into the action.  Full list of players and factions played, with my personal surprise being the number of Khador players attending.  It should be noted, that there were a number of newer players; to the both the game and the Scottish tournament scene.  Steve Moffat in particular had only been playing around 6 months.

Big thank you should got to Steve, the owner of Common Ground Games; as well as his staff for everything they did.  We arrived to the tables already marked out (4’x4′), with a smaller 2 foot space for player to place their trays and gear.  A lot of the comments from players, were positive about the venue; staff or the food throughout the day.  There is something surreal, about having a cheese and ham toastie brought to your table as you play.

So who won? Well despite our best efforts to play 5 rounds, we had a clear winner by round 4; so consulting with Frazer Penman the other PG we called it time at that point.

1. Michael Dick – Cryx

I’ll upload the rest of the photos taken throughout the day, but I want to thank all the contributors to the event – Battlefoam, Bases4War, Micro Art Studio, Warbases, Firestorm Games and Privateer Press.  I would also like to thank Frazer Penman, Steve and staff at Common Ground Games and most definitely my wife Julia; who was fantastic keeping it all straight with the admin and scores.  Here’s to Scottish Masters 2014!

Scottish Masters & WTC

I apologise for the lack of news on the Scottish Masters, something happened on Tuesday which has thrown me completely out of kilter.  Hopefully tonight or tomorrow I can write up a full review, with photos from the day.

If you don’t already know, the World Team Championships are running right now in Belgium, with 30 teams of 5 players battling it out to be crowned the best in the world.  You can check out the live results, feeds and pairings as the tournament continues for the next two days.

So in the spirit of good will to all teams taking part, Go Team Scotland.

Final Stretch

This time next week, the Scottish Masters will be over; and we will have hopefully achieved the purpose we set out at the start.  The main aim, was to get a large Masters style tournament; on the Scottish and eventually the UK calender.  Starting small, would allow us to iron out any issues (of which we had a few); but also allow us to plan more efficiently for 2014.

I think given the time frame we had, we have achieved everything we hoped for on the planning side of the event.  Every player will walk away from the day, with a few momento’s of the day; a lucky few will win the great prizes contributed by the generosity of Battlefoam, Bases4War, Firestorm Games, Micro Art Studio, Warbases and Privateer Press.

Talking of contributions, I received the Warbases items today and have to admit to being pleasantly surprised by them.  The Feat Tokens look great and made of acrylic, not the MDF I was expecting.  The Bullet Keyrings, have just to get the split rings attached, to complete the look; but they come made up of at least 6 different colours of acrylic (I might need to requisition a Cryx green one).  With just the Chess Clocks and the resent items from Micro Art Studio, we are Good to Go!

Vagaries of Life

This last week has been a nightmare of stress and problems, which not all of them relate to the Scottish Masters.  I was up in Dundee for a Who’s the Boss event, run by Frazer; which was a lot of fun.  Adding in a charity element to the event, made not only some money for charity; but gave us one of the best laughs all day.  Seeing two players outbidding each other NOT to use Zerkova, as their caster for that round; was funny as anything I’ve seen in a while.

So to come down from that high, to a sick cat (literally all the time sick), Rankings HQ, and a parcel sent back to Micro Art Studio; as the Post Office can’t be bothered to knock my door and/or post a card.  I am very grateful to Kacper at Micro Art Studio for offering to resend the items, as I saw some of the bases on Saturday; and they are very good detail and quality.

Overall this week has left me a little worse for wear…..and it’s not even Friday.  Tomorrow I order the trophies, which will be the last of the things we are needing to get towards the Scottish Masters.

There is one bright moment in all this darkness, which arrived just as I was about to write this post.  Bob, Steve and the great folks at PP/Cerberus, have sent along some models as prizes/support/etc not all of them WM/H; there is a couple of IKRPG ones in there as well.  So this begs the question.   Where do I sign up for this event, with all these goodies on offer?

Rankings HQ Update #rankingshq

I would like to first of all thank Andrew Galea, for getting back to me so promptly over the issues I raised with Rankings HQ.  Through a couple of emails and communications in Rankings HQ; we have gotten the problems sorted and things are back on track.

The customer service since he contacted me, has been excellent and I feel this recent experience is a one off situation.  Hopefully when the planning of the Scottish Master 2014 comes around, we’ll be turning to Rankings HQ to handle the hard part for us.
