Glasgow is Back

With the scene in Glasgow quiet recently, it was good to finally get back there to play.  The new PG Michael, was running his first event since taking the black.  It was also a good run for those tweaking their lists ahead of the UK Nationals this weekend.

Due to circumstances I still haven’t run the Coven list yet.  Not the most ideal situation, given some new models (Malice, Iron Lich Overseers) and rules (Jack Marshall); I have to contend with on the day in competition.  That said, it would be par for course in my WM/H history; jumping in feet first and just enjoying the ride to the bottom.

So how did I do in Glasgow? Surprisingly better than I thought.  Running the same Morty/pDenny lists, I came close in both games I played.

First game was against one of best players in Scotland imo.  PDenny v Kromac, it wasn’t plain sailing on either side of the board; as initial devastation of the twin McThrall units left Denny with the Seether and Kraken to threaten Kromac.  Kraken had already slammed and killed Getarix; knocking down a Warpwolf Stalker in the process.  Sadly the 2nd Stalker, with the help of Shifting Stones got teleported behind Denny (failed domination of flag) to rip her to pieces. It was one of those, kill her or be killed moments.  Loss via Assassination, with no CP claimed; Incursion scenario

My other game was against Luke, who was right royally shafted by his dice and a lapse of concentration.  As it was Divide and Conquer, I chose to use Morty against eSkarre; the movement sisters (Overrun/Perdition). Game should have been over on turn two, under Skarre’s feat turn Morty left exposed to Nightmare or Deathjack; Luke forgot about the model during his turn.  This prevented him removing the Seether from the zone and dominating it.  With little desire to put all my jacks into melee without attacking, I used their movement to cover Morty while threatening the Satyxis Raiders on the left flank with my Deathjack.  Doing damage limitation (contesting the zone), I dragged Morty over to the flag to dominate that.  Sadly Perdition on Luke’s DJ ended with Morty on the end of a DJ fist. Loss via Assassination, with no CP claimed; Outflank scenario

Overall a great day, despite losing the games; they could really have gone either way.  Which is another reason I love this game, it ain’t over till Grissell sings.

Just updated the Upcoming Events list, which some of you will notice there is little time to breath between events at this time of the year.

This is in part due to the fantastic player base that is building up in Scotland for Warmachine/Hordes.  The Colossal Launch event on 15th July, was posted up on our Scottish WM/H pages; within a week we had 12 players signed up.  We now have 17 and with just over a week, we can’t fit any more into the shop (12 player spaces max).

With other venues/stores opening up, this is a great time to be getting into the game.  We even have another Press Ganger in Glasgow, Scott Burry; who will be working with Spellbound Games in Glasgow to promote the game there as well.  For those going to the ETC’s at the weekend, I’ll look forward to meeting some of you.  Just look out for The Mad Scotsman, sans the kilt.

Dundee Battle Report

Just getting time now (Sunday) to post this up.  It was a long, but exciting day in sunny Dundee yesterday.  Total of 19 players turned up, with some from as north as Aberdeen; West as Glasgow and South as yours truly.

Game 1 – Cryx v Circle (Incursion scenario)

I am really not happy with myself on this game, I made some stupid errors that cost me the game.  Essentially my opponent was running Mohsar, dropping Pillars of Salt to stop me getting to the flags from Incursion scenario.  The errors, are that I didn’t pick up on the fact; he couldn’t place the Pillar ON the flag.  Second mistake was thinking I had to go around it, I had a fricking Deathjack; which could have walked up and sorted out the problem.  As it was, it came to Dice Down and he had managed to kill 4 points more than me.

Game 2 – Cryx v Cryx (Demolition scenario)

I really enjoyed this game, though not because of the result.  It was mostly for the fact it was eDenny v eGaspy (Tier 4).  I haven’t got to play much of the new scenarios, so playing this one was a learning experience too.  The Explosive Cache can be brutal, if you catch things right.  With eDenny, this i always possible.  Going first, ran everything, Nightmare Ghostly through terrain; Nightwretch in a good position to channel and use it’s AOE.  eDenny within walking distance of controlling the Cache, with a wall of infantry to get through.  Turn 2, walk up use her Feat; lock up opponents Gaspy, DJ and some Banes which block the ones behind.  Nightmare begins the process of clearing out the CZ, with the help of the Warwitch Siren.  The trick I liked mostly though, is hitting something with Hellmouth; then using the Cache to take out anything left over.  POW 12, followed by POW 14; there isn’t much that is going to walk away undamaged. Scenario win – 4 CP (2 claimed on the last turn OBJ + CZ, which I just checked IS allowed on this scenario).

Part 2 will be the final 3 games, in which I taste victory and show that Cryx players have a heart too.

I am going simple on the reinforcements, with all lists getting the same three models – 2 Stalkers and a Warwitch Siren.  I’ve run this well before (not as reinforcements), as a stealthy; fast-moving assassination team.  With both Stalkers fully loaded with focus on entry, this gives them even more potency.  Potential 13.5″ threat range, from mid board area; that is something to be wary of.  The Siren as well, with Venom; could potentially cause havoc to infantry on that side of the board.  She could also give the jacks/beasts Shadow Bind, to stop them advancing.  Disruption is the key here, push the battle on one side and cause a hole to open up.  Another ploy is just avoid combat, go for the assassination.  While it would be a waste of free focus, sending a Stalker and Siren at a run; could potentially put them in the enemy deployment area.  Two threats from the rear, one with Grievous Wounds and Arcane Assassin.

Hordes Domination Previews

Privateer Press released the studio painted models of Vayl, Consul of Everblight; the new epic Warlock for Legion of Everblight.  They have also released details of Grissel Bloodsong, Marshal of the Kriels; the new Epic Warlock for Trollbloods.

I’m pretty stoked about Epic Grissel, as despite some negativity with the prime version; I liked the prime model for her.  The new one though, looks awesome; even more so as it brought to mind a certain vision.  Glasgow on a Saturday night, half the woman look like this.  Tanked up on Buckie (fortified wine), they swing their bottles like Grissel does her Hammer.  Even the pose says “Com’on then, I’ll gae ya a square go.”, for those not fluent in Drunken Scots; it goes something like this – Please excuse my drunken state, I think you looked at me wrong; so I am offering to rearrange your face with this bottle of cheap cats piss.

With Jarl Skald and Grissel now,  I can see me adding to my trolls in the near future.
