Worlds at War 11/10/11

In a change to our regular Thursday night Warmachine/Hordes, we played on a Tuesday instead; just to confuse the Cygnar players.  Just kidding, we did give them advance notice and they duly turned up.

I’d like to say a big thanks to Alan and Tom, from Edinburgh League of Gamers; who come out from Edinburgh to play.  While it looked quiet, it was far from it; which is always a good thing in gaming.  Hearing the cogs turning, can sometimes be off-putting.  Anyway, I played Tom first up; my Cryx against his Retribution of Scyrah.  It was Ravyn v pGaspy, which was quite a close game through the middle part.  Surprisingly, I went second and held back; letting my Stalkers do as much damage as possible; while advancing my McThralls and Biles.  The terrain hampered me a little, with a 1″ wall almost running through the middle of the board.  The Deathjack got hemmed in really well and credit to Tom for containing the beast for most of the game.  Biles did a little damage, while pGaspy took out 80% of the Mage Hunter Assassins on his feat turn.  Then I did my usual and got a little over zealous, charging Gaspy at the back arc of a Phoenix; ignoring Manticore to my own peril as it then charged in for the caster kill.

Taking a 2 minute breather, it was onto play Alan next; with his Cygnar army of ‘Siege’ Brisbane.  Seeing as I hadn’t run him in months, I took out Goreshade.  I have to say, that while I do love running Skarre and Scaverous; Goreshade has that little something to make him special. Blackbanes, 2 x Ripjaws were new additions to the army I ran previously. Taking out the DJ, to allow me to run 2 x Stalkers, alongside the Combine and Warwitch Siren.  Facing me across the board, was as noted Brisbane, Sentinel, Centurion and a Stormclad.  Alan also had two units of Stormblades plus UA on one, WA of the Gunner on the other.   Using the two Stalkers, Siren and Blackbanes to harass the right flank; I aimed to drive Brisbane into a corner.  The difficulty I had, was keeping his heavies off me; while I was advancing with my units and caster.  The Ripjaws did well in this, holding them up until the Combine could get in on the Centurion; wrecking it in the last turn.  Biles did their job perfectly, taking out nearly all the Stormblades on the left flank; while Blackbanes forced the right flank Stormblades; along with Brisbane into the corner I had hoped for in the beginning.  I am not sure if Alan had faced Goreshade before, as he wasn’t aware of Mage Blight; nor the awesomeness of Goreshades feat. Poor Stormclad, was looking down at Goreshade, all alone; no Deathwalker in sight.  When suddenly 6 Bane Thralls pop into sight and start hacking chunks out of his armour.  Not long after that, the Stalkers; taking the long way around charged Brisbane with 3 focus (1 to charge, 2 to boost DMG).

Another great night tonight, against two great players.  If you ever get the chance to go to ELG, get a game with them; I promise a great game.

DJ Complete – 8/8/11

I finally got it finished last night about midnight, with the first coat of gloss varnish within 5 minutes; the next an hour later.  I’d need to check the posts, but I figure I have been working on this for about a month now.  It’s been a long, hard month; but I think the rewards have been worth it.  For those lucky enough to be in Kirkcaldy at Kingdom of Adventure next Saturday (20th), you will get to see this on the table at their tournament.  For those not able to see it up close and personal, hope you enjoy the pictures.

Deathjack WIP Update

It’s been such a long process, that I forget when I even started this.  I think I am coming into week 5 of this model, which is unbelievable for me.  I am someone that wants to see the finished product, but can’t wait the time needed to get there.  So sometimes I will rush models to get them finished, thus making the end product worse.

With the Deathjack, I don’t have that option.  First of all, I am intending for this to be my entry into a painting competition; so has to be the best my painting can be.  Second, I’ve already put in an estimated 5 weeks; I don’t want that ruined by impatience.

So is it paying off?  Take a look and decide for yourself.

Heating up

I hadn’t realised it was only 3 days ago, that I posted something on here. Seems like a week has passed, in which my total focus has been the Deathjack.  I think by the time I am finished, I will be having nightmares about it. That said, I have done masses of work on it.  The base is almost finished, with the necrotite green sludge and rocky outcrop all painted.  At the moment the DJ seems lopsided, sitting on the base; so I am building up the base on one side to compensate.  My only concern, is the necrotite green is like ‘woah pass the fricking sunglasses’.  Which will instantly draw the eye, making all the hard work on the DJ secondary.  That said, it is a minor problem; which is easily fixed.

I’ve also been painting my Bile Thralls, in preparation for Kirkcaldy.  I’ve kind of decided on my two lists of Scaverous and pGaspy.

  • Scaverous
  • Deathjack
  • Ripjaw
  • Ripjaw
  • Bile Thralls
  • McThralls
  • Blackbanes Ghost Raiders
  • Warwitch Siren
  • Skarlock Thrall
I’d love to have the Withershadow Combine, but at the moment; I think this list gives me plenty of options.
  • pGaspy
  • Deathjack
  • Ripjaw
  • Defiler
  • McThralls
  • Cylena Raefyll and Nyss Hunters
  • Skarlock Thrall
  • Warwitch Siren
  • Gorman Di Wulfe
  • Ragman
Had a tough time making this list, as I haven’t played pGaspy in a long time. I’ll probably have to run it between now and tournament time, to see if there are any tweaks I need to make.  Whatever I run, I must be sure to remember one thing; pGaspy’s feat DOES work with Cryx; you just get focus replenish.  Which can be critical against being assassinated, or just giving you lots more to do with pGaspy.
Anyway, back to work; Deathjack to finish then onto Bile Thralls.

DJ Cryx in da House

Ok rubbish title, but what can you expect; when I have been painting solidly for 6 hours.  Initially I had expected to take my time with the Deathjack, that has gone completely out the window.  That said, I have very little to show for the time I have put into it; well except this little picture.

Freehand artwork

This isn’t the finished product, in all honesty; I am so pleased with the final piece it is unreal.  Doing this little piece, has also served to give me a colour scheme I want.  Initially I had wanted black armour, hoping to learn how to highlight black armour.  My first attempts looked like a 3 year old had done it, not the look I was hoping for.  So Plan B, the usual plan that I revert to; make it up as I go along.  So far it’s working out, I have the carapace above finished; most other parts started.  Way things are going, I could potentially have the DJ finished within a week.  Total build and paint time – 3 1/2 weeks.

Maybe I could test it out on some new terrain I just came across.  I discovered a new UK company called Battleboards, which will shortly start producing very detailed terrain tiles, which look amazing.  2′ by 2′ modular boards, they are very high quality.  Ok they are a little more expensive, than others out there; but seriously the quality is worth it.  Check out their Facebook page to see examples – Battleboards on Facebook
