#privateerpress WM: Tactics

Well the countdown is getting shorter, but the backers for the Warmachine: Tactics kickstarter is getting bigger by the day.  Just over 15,000 backers, a total of $1, 200,000 + pledges from Paypal totallying $7,000; they are very close to opening one of the best stories in WM (imo anyway).

Called Dark Seduction, it tells the tale of two sisters; separated and brought up on opposite sides of the war.  Victoria Haley, Commander of the Cygnarian forces and Deneghra, Warwitch of the Cryxian armies that raid Immoren.  Many doubt Deneghra even knows her true name, as one night during a Cryxian raid on her town; an apparition called Nightmare stole her away from her family and her sister.  Raised by the Cryx, her former life dissolved slowly to be replaced by one of corruption and devious scheming; within the power play of leaders.  Seemingly a loyal second in command to Asphyxious, Deneghra learned her lessons well; to the point that not even her commander is safe from her machinations.

After this stretch goal has been reached, the next two are ones that will please a lot of players.  Magnus the Traitor and his battlegroup, with Retribution of Scyrah to follow.  So if you want your chance to be part of this greatness, you can pledge here for as little as $20 for the game.   With just 3 days left, I really do hope they get to bring in the Retribution; otherwise those Angry Elves will be (even more) insufferable for the rest of eternity.

UK Nationals Report

I am back home safe, after a long exhausting weekend at the UK Nationals.  First of all, congratulations to all the organisers and officials for a great weekend.  Other than some technical issues, the whole event ran smoothly and with very few problems. I can’t say that it was all fun, there are parts of the event that were a disappointment for me personally; however the overall impression is that it is a great beginning.

I had written all my notes on the spare army list sheet; which I was using as my copy.  After game 3, the ‘official’ sheet went missing and I was forced to hand in my copy (with notes); after each round.  As it turned out, I forgot to ask for it back at the end; most likely due to tiredness.  So please forgive me, if I don’t remember the full details of each game.

Round 1 – This was not the match up I had wanted at all.  I travelled all the way from Scotland, only to face one of our local players in the first round.  Credit to Steve McConnachie, his Rask list murdered my Coven list; bringing the game to a final brutal end. Loss via Assassination, with no CP claimed; ???? Scenario

Round 2 – On reading my lists, my opponent thought I would take pDenny; given that facing Retribution would be a default to Stealth.  Thing about that, is that I don’t play like others; I play what I like not what others think is best.  So Ravyn v Morty was the match up, which was a seesaw affair with the heavy jacks causing my opponent a few problems.  Eiryss got held up by a Stalker, but it was the Mage Hunter Strike Force with Shadow Hunter that came closest to killing Morty in turn 2.  It took Hyperion to eventually take that last point off Morty, who had held on long enough for DJ to be within range of an assassination on Ravyn. Loss via Assassination, with 2 CP claimed; ????? scenario

Round 3 – With 25 Cryx players there, it was a tale of woe for many; that they faced the faction multiple times.  Portal from France was my first Cryxian opponent, but also a really nice guy as well.  It was also a Kraken face off, with Portal running pGaspy with his Kraken; against my pDenny list.  One thing I will say, is that I appreciated the fact that Portal played the same way as I believe “You declare it, you did it”.  None of this “Oh it’s not going to work that way, so I’ll try something slightly different”.  Even though it cost me the game in the end, I admire that about him to stick to that view. Loss via Assassination, with no CP claimed; ???? scenario

Round 4 – This is perhaps the most close game I have ever played in 3 years of WM/H.  Scenario was Incursion (at least I remember that), with pDenny and the Kraken taking on pKruger with Pureblood and 2 Stalkers.  With the right hand flag disappearing, this left the board open on the left.  I struggled to clear out the Druids, with the Kraken’s unicorn gun; so decided to change tact; to one of salvaging as many CP’s as possible.  Shielding Denny with the Kraken, as much as possible; took out the Stalker contesting the flag on the left.  Claiming 3 CP, with my opponent needing to assassinate Denny to stop me winning. In hindsight, I was silly for not asking for a judge to check the LOS to Denny, after Kruger had Telekenisis himself to what he thought was viable LoS.  It was a 50/50 call as to whether he had LoS, at a crucial point in the game; so lesson learned is to not be so easy going.  Loss via Assassination, with 3 CP claimed; Incursion scenario

By my reckoning, it was nearly 12 hours straight of gaming on the Saturday; with little break between rounds to recover.  I didn’t get back into my hotel room till about 10:30pm, which had made this one hell of a long day with little food or rest.  Not sure about UK Masters, but by Sunday morning I felt like I’d run the Iron Gauntlet.

Part 2 – 2nd day with some pics from the event.

Still Painting Away

With just 16 hours till I start heading to the UK Nationals, I am still busy painting models.  This has been hard, long and in many respects; rewarding month (and a bit) of achievements.

With just the final Harrower to finish, I will have painted:

  • Kraken
  • 2 x Seether
  • 2 x Harrowers
  • Malice
  • 4 McThralls
  • Blood Witches (not finished)

That isn’t including the repairs to DJ, Malice Morty; with marking the bases on all the new models painted and ones that I need at the weekend.  Tonight I am going to slowly paint this last Harrower, then get an early night; say about 2am.  So to all those who will face me across the field of battle at the weekend…….please don’t hurt me too much; or you will have my wife to deal with mwaaahhh!

Make it stop…..

The pressure of trying to paint these models in time, is starting to get to me.  My main focus seems to be on the Kraken just now, to the point that the Blood Hags are just being left unfinished just now.  That said, the Kraken *should* be ready for action this weekend in Dundee; with perhaps one last hard push I can have if finished tomorrow or Friday.

In other news I have decided on the following Casters; at least for the time being.  The choices were mostly because of knowledge of the Casters and my enjoyment of playing them.  Of them all, Morty is my favourite; having DJ and 2 Seethers for an opponent to contend with under Morty’s feat/spells; it so much fun.

  • Mortenebra (+ Deryliss) – Tier 4 (Infernal Machines)
  • pDeneghra – Non Tier
  • The Witch Coven of Ghalgast (+ Egregore) – Tier 4 (Machine Minds)

Just to remind everyone what my DJ looks like…..Mwaaaahhh!

UK Nationals Lists

In the build up to the Nationals, I find myself in two minds.  On the one hand, there is the part that just wants to go have a good time and play some games. The other part of me is competitive, so wants to do the best I can.

One of the problems I have though, is that being a PG; I haven’t had much chance to play.  My knowledge is rusty and I really need an intense refresher course in even the basics of the game.  This makes me nervous about facing some of the best players in the UK, ill prepared to play.

Another problem, is army lists.  My first inclination is to go with Casters I know and love – Mortenebra and the Witch Coven.  I’d like to run eSkarre or pDenny, but can’t decide which one to run.  pDenny I am more familiar with, but Skarre is just so much fun to play.

So this week I’m going to post up some potential lists I will be looking at over the two tournaments leading up to the Nationals.
